Are you interested in converting your motorcycle into an electric one but don't know where to begin?

At Sine Power, we specialize in providing conversion parts for individuals who are building their own electric motorcycles. With over 15 years of experience in this industry, most of our customers are experienced builders on their third, fourth, or even fifth electric motorcycle project. However, if you're new to this and starting your first electric motorcycle build, it can be overwhelming. That's why we have created this page to guide you through the initial steps.

Is converting a regular motorcycle to an Electric one the right choice for me?

It seems like you're interested in getting an Electric motorcycle and are considering the option of converting a regular motorcycle instead of purchasing a pre-made Electric motorcycle from a factory. There are several advantages to this approach, which we have summarized in this article. [Link to DIY vs Factory Electric motorcycle]

However, converting a motorcycle yourself may not be suitable for everyone. Nowadays, there are numerous factory Electric motorcycles available in different price ranges and with varying performance levels. If you're satisfied with one of those and prefer a ready-made solution instead of building your own, then that's the path you should take.

If you're attracted to the idea of a DIY project for any of the reasons mentioned earlier, we are here to assist you. There are two qualities that we value if you're considering becoming a customer of sine-power:

  1. You have a strong interest in taking on a project rather than simply purchasing a product.

  2. You have a hands-on approach and are confident in your ability to create and fix things.

Not everyone agrees with point 2, however, if you have a dear friend, relative, or nearby resident who matches that description and is willing to assist you in constructing and resolving any issues, that would also be suitable. We don't anticipate you to possess a multimeter in your collection of tools for measuring electrical potentials, but we would anticipate you to be willing to buy one if a specific step in resolving the issue necessitates it.

What components are necessary for converting an electric motorcycle?

At the bare minimum, you will need a battery pack, a motor, a motor controller, and either a throttle or a pedal sensor. To understand the function of each component, please refer to the following webpage:[Link to Overview of electric motorcycle components]
At sine power, you have the option to purchase all of these parts as a complete kit or buy them individually from our parts page. If you are knowledgeable, you can also mix and match parts from us and other suppliers. We are completely fine with that, unlike many other places.

What skills are necessary for converting an electric motorcycle?

Luckily, the electric motorcycle components available today are much simpler to install on a motorcycle than in the past. There is no need for soldering electrical connections, crimping connectors, or dealing with complex wheel lacing. If you have the basic mechanical ability to fix a flat tire or replace and adjust brakes or gears, you should be able to install a kit without much difficulty in just one afternoon.

Alright, I'm convinced, but with so many choices available, I'm not sure where to start.

Typically, the process begins with having a general idea of the motor model you desire. This will depend on the mechanical specifications of your current oil motorcycle and your desired power and performance. The following webpage provides a summary of the different hub motor models available for purchase at SinePower.

If your oil motorcycle has standard dropouts, most of the front and rear hub motor kits will easily fit without any complications.

The motor selection primarily determines the torque and power capabilities of the kit, while the battery's voltage and capacity determine the maximum speed and range you can achieve on a single charge. Therefore, you should first decide whether you want a smaller and lighter system with minimal assistance or a heavier and more powerful drive, and then choose a battery model that can provide your desired range and speed.

When you add a kit to your shopping cart, it will display the unloaded wheel speed at different voltages and provide a link to our motor simulator with the selected components. These tools are technical, but they assist in understanding the performance of the chosen components.

Throttle?

A throttle is a device that lets the rider control how much power is being produced by the electric motor. It works like the throttle on a motorcycle or scooter. By turning or pressing the throttle, the rider can make the electric motorcycle go faster or slower. Throttle-based systems always provide the same amount of power, no matter how much the rider is pedaling.

If you're new to this and don't want to be confused by too many options, we recommend starting with just a throttle. You might find that it's all you need.

I'm still completely puzzled, could you please just suggest what I should get?

Absolutely! Roughly 50% of the questions we receive begin with customers describing their bike and asking for our advice. We are more than happy to assist with this. However, in addition to the make and model of your motorcycle, we also require some information regarding the desired performance of the kit. This can be summarized by three key factors:

  1. Speed: How fast do you want the system to continue providing assistance?

  2. Power: How much torque and power are you seeking? It doesn't have to be measured in watts or newton-meters. Are you tackling steep hills while towing a 200lb trailer? Or are you a fit commuter hoping for a speed boost on mainly flat terrain?

  3. Range: How far do you need to travel on a single charge? We suggest always having enough charge for your return journey, rather than relying on recharging at work.

Therefore, please include this information in your inquiry to save us from having to ask for it. Once we have an idea of these three points and a description of your motorcycle, we usually have no trouble recommending one or two systems from our selection.

I'm completely hooked on my motorcycle. Could you assist me in installing a kit?

Unfortunately, Sine Power is not a motorcycle customization store. Instead, we are a company focused on technology and product development, run by engineers who have graduated. However, if you're not into do-it-yourself projects, you can always purchase our electric motorcycles directly. Our objective is to manufacture and provide parts and information for individuals who have a passion for installing these components themselves or with the help of close friends or acquaintances. This approach also ensures that motorcycle users (or those around them) become familiar with the process of combining all the components together. As a result, they can easily troubleshoot any initial issues and become more resourceful when minor problems arise.

Can you suggest a store where I can have it installed for me?

We would like to mention that you can bring a kit to any motorcycle shop and they will be happy to install it and provide assistance and service, but unfortunately, that is not the case. Most Electric motorcycle shops are designed to only sell specific factory-made electric motorcycles and rely on the manufacturer to handle warranty support by simply swapping components. They are not usually interested in getting involved in the electrical or customized aspects of the process.
We are aiming to change this mindset by offerig conversion kits that have open standards and interchangeable components. This way, motorcycle shops can easily provide service and upgrades for electric motorcycles, just like they do for traditional motorcycles. We will see if this idea gains popularity. In the meantime, if you are unable to install the kit yourself, there are a few Electric motorcycle shops that have staff members with a personal interest in DIY electric motorcycle builds. They are willing to take on kit installations and support them. So, make some calls or check our dealers locator page.

However..

If you prefer a straightforward and uncomplicated solution, we do offer our minimal G311 Electric motorcycle conversion kit. This kit is designed to work on most Electric motorcycles and all you need to do is select the appropriate wheel diameter for your motorcycle.
